Public apathy on display as accident victims die in Jaipur - An incident of public apathy came to light when a 26-year-old woman and her 6-month-old daughter were crushed to death as vehicles go speeding by in Jaipur on Sunday.

The bodies of the woman and her infant daughter were dragged to a few metres after the truck ran over them. The deceased woman's husband and son have sustained minor injuries.

CCTV footages showed that the woman's husband and his four-year-old son beseeched passers-by for help for almost 10 minutes. However, no one stopped to help them, police said.

While two-wheelers regularly flout the norm and use the tunnel to save time, the incident also raises questions on inability of government or private agencies involved in tunnel maintenance to prevent the entry of two-wheelers.

TOI had highlighted the issue in its report on April 3 titled 'Traffic police, RRRIL lock horns over 2-wheelers' entry'. The report had stated how traffic police and RRRIL (Rohan Rajdeep Rajasthan Infrastructure Limited), which is entrusted with the task of tunnel maintenance, have been passing the buck on who should deploy personnel to stop the entry of two-wheelers inside the tunnel.

According to the police, one Kanhaiya Lal Raiger, a resident of Thikariyawas village situated on Ajmer Road was on the way to his in-laws' house in Luniyawas with his wife Guddi (26), son Tanish (4) and eight-month old daughter Arushi.

"They were driving through the tunnel when an overspeeding truck hit the bike from behind. Guddi was holding Arushi in her hands. Both were thrown off the bike. The truck ran over them and they died on the spot," said DCP, traffic Lata Manoj Kumar. The officer said the truck sped away after the accident but an FIR has been registered against the trucker.

DCP said that an interceptor is deployed at the entrance of the tunnel but people sometimes manage to slip through.

"We would step up the vigilance. We have also spoken with the JDA for more coordinated efforts to prevent such mishaps," the DCP said.

RRRIL officials had earlier told TOI that warning boards asking two-wheelers to not use the tunnel were installed and volunteers too were deployed. However, it was difficult to stop the two-wheelers from entering the tunnel as the company was not authorized to penalize the defaulters. ( indiatimes.com )
